Loch Ness & It's Famous Loch Ness Monster

In 2005 our family traveled to Scotland, and of course visited Loch Ness while we were there in hopes of catching a glimpse of its elusive sea monster for ourselves.  Sadly, there was no Loch Ness Monster sighting for us.  It's interesting how you tell yourself that you don't believe in such things, but when you're on the lake (loch) you're waiting with bated breath, just hoping beyond reason that you'll see Nessie.

History of Loch Ness Monster Sightings

There has always been a fascination with Nessie, right from the first century AD to today.  Here's a little history that I've been able to uncover.

The Picts who inhabited Scotland in the first century AD have stone carvings of an aquatic creature in Loch Ness. St. Columba, an Irish Monk in the 6th century, wrote that he soothed the murdering beast in his biography. The 1933 sighting by a couple brought newspaper famed to "Nessie". People came from all over to see the creature. With more than 4,000 sightings, and some from noted people, Nessie became famous. In 1934, the now-famous picture of the Loch Ness Monster's silhouette in the water was taken by a physician in London. In 1957 a local doctor published a book which was a collection of sightings to vindicate the integrity of the witnesses to this phenomenon. This sparked a flury of interest using new technology such as sonar to find the beast. In 1957 a new technology of underwater photography using strobe lights photographed the flipper of an aquatic creature, which was presented in the House of Commons in London. In 2003 satellite sonar scanned every section of the Loch and found no evidence of a large living aquatic creature.

Bowling Techniques to Help You Become a Better Bowler

I have enjoyed bowling all of my life, but I still consider myself more of a beginner.  I've never taken lessons and have pretty much just learned by trial and error over the years.  At some point one has to improve to stay competitive!  I'm not the type who has to win every time, but losing every time - or least not being good enough to be competitive - takes the fun out of it.

Here is a great article written by the Bowling Coach to learn how to consistently bowl strikes and spares.  It takes a little practice, but the techniques are not difficult to master and you'll find one that you prefer to use or can use the most successfully.

Happy Bowling!

3 Bowling Techniques to Make a Strike or Spare

Author: The Bowling Coach

It is a strike, when all of the pins are knocked down “on the first ball of a frame.”

Every bowler would like to hit a strike and score big to win with this action, but it is not merely a stroke of luck. Bowlers who want to make it big by hitting strikes more often than not have to work at it.

Like in any sport, great action comes in small packages, where the attention is focused on the techniques learned and used by that player. It is important for every player to know how to hone his or her skills to win the game.

So for those who wish to make a strike or a spare in order to win a match, here are three bowling techniques that they can use:

1. Spinner

This technique refers to the way of delivering a shot with the intention that no more than a minor part of the ball touches contacts the lane. This technique promotes less friction between the ball and the lane, not considering the “oiling pattern” of that lane. As a result the ball glides practically in a straight line down the lane.

Experts contend, however, that this kind of shot is not very successful in that it does not attempt to take full advantage of the dragging the power of the bowler.

2. Stroker

With this kind of technique, the bowler relies more on precision than strength. This technique is characterized by employing the “by the book” style of playing that entails the proper execution of even movements, keeping square shoulders to the target all the way through the release of the ball, and maintaining an on-time move at the “foul line.”

This is the “classic” technique of most bowlers because it employs smooth and controlled movements and lessens the possibility of injuries.

3. Cranker

This is the kind of technique that is being employed by a bowler who relies more on his strength to deliver a good shot rather than accuracy. It is like ‘hitting hard’ when a bowler uses this technique.

The skill involves more adrenaline that constitutes the bowler’s drive to win.

Usually, crankers use “late timing”, they do not slide, attempt to get to the “foul line” earlier than the ball, and they bend their elbows to keep their hands at the back and beneath the ball.

There are no perfect techniques, but there is a particular technique for every player. The important thing is to create a strike or even a spare.

Football 101 To Prepare You to Watch Football with the Family on Thanksgiving

The Who, What, Where, When and Why of Watching Professional Football

Author: Howard Becker

Who watches professional football?
That's easy. Just about everyone. Or, at least almost everyone. Men, women, children. Young people, old people. Teachers, doctors, lawyers, the family priest. People of all races and religions watch football. People of all sizes and shapes. Even the family pet has been known to watch a game or two. Each and every Sunday during football season, stadiums across the country are filled to capacity with thousands of people. Each and every Sunday, millions of TV viewers are tuned to the games.

What is professional football?
For those of you unfamiliar with the game, professional football is not just a bunch of grown men running back and forth down a field knocking the stuffing out of each other. Professional football is a game played by athletes who possess an unusual combination of both strength and speed. In what other sport do you see men weighing over 300 lbs. that run like the wind? Professional football is a game played with 11 players per side who move at tremendous speed, all working in sync with one another, unlike anything you will see in any other sport.

When do people watch professional football?
The NFL season actually starts in early August with Preseason games. These are games that teams play to get themselves ready for the Regular Season which begins in early September. During the Regular Season, games are played every week, with the majority of the games played Sunday afternoon. There is also a game played on Sunday night, as well as Monday night. In addition, later in the season, there are a few Thursday night games and a Saturday game. Lest we forget, Thanksgiving Day, where you now get to see, not one, not two, but three games! The Regular Season culminates with playoff games beginning in January which are played on Saturdays and Sundays and finally topped off with the Super Bowl Sunday.

Where do people watch professional football?
Anywhere there is a TV. At home, at a friend's house, at a restaurant, at a bar, at the health club, etc. Even your local Sears. Trust me, I know. And I guarantee, wherever there is a TV, there will be a crowd.
If you're really lucky, you'll get to go to the stadium and see the game in person. Depending on where you live, if you are in a cold weather city, better bundle up! But, it's all worth it. Why else would you see 60,000 fans doing it?

Why watch professional football?
Only because it's the greatest game ever! Think about it - why else would millions of fans tune their dials to the game every Sunday? And why would thousands upon thousands fill up stadiums across the U.S.? There must be something to this game, right?
I'm convinced that there are two kinds of people. Those that are already fans and those that want to be fans, but aren't yet because they don't understand football. And the reason they don't understand it, is because they've had nobody (or nothing) to really explain football to them. Granted, it does have a "lingo" all its own, but I guarantee, once you've come to learn it, you won't look back.

Football 101

Great visual explanation of how football is played in the NFL

Author: Howard Becker

For those of you who want to learn football and join this craze called the NFL (National Football League), this is for you. Here are some football basics to get you started:

  • An NFL team has 53 players; some play on Offense (unit that possession of the ball and is trying to score); some play on Defense (unit that attempts to stop its opponent’s Offense from scoring) and some play on Special Teams (units that are on the field for kickoffs, punts and field goals)
  • At any given time, a team has 11 players on the field
  • The Offense attempts to advance the ball past its opponent's goal line and score touchdowns (worth 6 points) or move it into field goal range for its Kicker to attempt a field goal (worth 3 points)
  • There are two type of plays - passing and rushing (running)
  • An Offense has four plays (downs) to advance the ball at least 10 yards; if it does so, it maintain possession of the ball; if it doesn’t, it may have to give up possession to its opponent
  • The amount of time a team has possession of the ball throughout the game is called its “Time of possession”; the longer, the better. This is critical, because if you don’t have the ball, you can’t score!
  • When a team loses possession of the ball to its opponent, through an interception (throwing a forward pass that an opponent catches) or fumble (when the ball carrier loses possession), it commits a “turnover”. Turnovers can be the difference between winning and losing. Each time a team commits a turnover, it gives itself one less and its opponent one more opportunity to score
  • Finally, when someone asks you the score of the game, remember to always say the name of the team that is winning or that has won first. For example, if the Bears are leading the Lions 14 - 10, say something like “The Bears are up fourteen to ten”, NOT “The Bears are winning ten to fourteen”. If the score is 10 - 0, say “It’s ten oh, Bears.” Notice the use of the word “oh”? If its 17 - 17, say “It’s seventeen all.” Notice the use of the word “all”? Get the idea?

Youth Football Running Back Drills

Youth Football Running Back Drills

Author: Trevor Sumner

Youth football rushing drills used to consist of practicing handoffs, holding on to the ball while being hit, and blocking for the quarterback. In today's game, a running back needs those rushing skills in addition to "reading" the defense for blitzing linebackers and catching the football out of the backfield. In many cases, the running back acts as an option for the quarterback if no other play is available. To play the position effectively, the running back must be quick on his feet, drive forward with power, and be able to react reflexively in an instant.

Below are some youth football rushing drills, but you can find more free football drills online at websites like Weplay.com.

Youth Football Running Back Drills

Weave Drill

The Weave drill teaches aspiring running backs proper footwork techniques. It focuses on balance while planting the foot and driving in another direction.

  • Place 5 cones in a straight line on the field about one yard apart.
  • Have the running backs line up near the first cone.
  • To begin, the coach hands the football off to the first running back.
  • The running back weaves in and out between the cones and returns handing the football off to the next running back.
When performing this running back drill, the focus should be on planting the outside foot firmly and then driving in the opposite direction. The proper planting of the foot will help prevent slippage when game time rolls around. The running backs should also focus on proper ball protection technique and maintain a low center of gravity.

Running the Gauntlet

This running back drill teaches players to receive a handoff, tuck it in, and break through immediate contact while retaining possession.
  • Position two dummy bags approximately 3 yards from the starting position.
  • Position two dummy bag holders 3 to 4 yards further downfield.
  • Have a linebacker roaming the field to force open field maneuvers.
  • After taking a handoff, the running back protects the football while running through the two dummy bags.
  • He must maintain control while being pursued by the dummy holders.
  • And finally, perform an evasive maneuver to avoid the linebacker.
  • Have each running back practice handoffs from both the right and left sides.

When performing youth football rushing drills such as these, the player should practice keeping a low center of gravity with knees up and shoulders down. Proper ball protection techniques must be employed in order to retain possession of the ball.

How To Decide If You're a Birdwatcher or a Birder

Birders have long contested birdwatching as a hobby, by saying the two are completely different. Birdwatching is a hobby that is done as an activity during recreation, but birders are more intense and dedicated to there cause.

The Birders

Whether it be in the United States or any where else in the world, what birders are saying is what they do is far removed from just a past time or a relaxation thing. They do it to study not only the species of birds but also their patterns of migration. They do not base their research on just observations, and they always invest in the most modern up to date optical equipment to strengthen their claims.

They no not normally visit popular birdwatching sites - what birders are looking for is new and unexplored sites.  This way they hope to find new information. They budget for their travel and it doesn't matter how far it may take them to gain fresh knowledge about birds.

The Birdwatchers

These people go birdwatching only with their eyes or a pair of binoculars, and are not normally into the technology of watching birds. It would not bother them if the equipment they use is the most modern or up to date available to them on the market. What is important to birdwatchers is the sense of fulfillment they get from what they are doing. There main aim is to relax, see the birds and enjoy the sights.

For birdwatchers it will not matter to them where they observe birds. To them their own garden is good enough, or they even may travel to a nature reserve close to them. These people have a love for birds but do not wish to study birds, just watch them.

The Right Time

Birdwatching is normally most active during the spring and fall migrations when there are a large amount of birds to be seen. This is because the birds are relocating northbound or southbound to nesting sites.

The best time to do any observing is early morning when the birds are looking for food. Starting early in the morning also gives you a longer day to do to any observing.

Seawatching

Birdwatching of this type is near coastal areas. It can also be done when one is aboard a seagoing vessel. The pelagic species of birds are normally just observed in coastal areas.

The Proper Etiquette

Whether you be a bird watcher or a birder, it should always be your main priority to look out for the wellbeing of the birds. You always protect the environment so any natural habitat will not be harmed. When you use the latest technology that is available, you will need to make sure it will not affect the birds in a negative manner.

Birdwatching, whether it be as a hobby or a study, must always be done with passion and concern about the birds and their welfare.

Top 5 Things You Need to Be a Javelin Thrower

The Javelin Throw requires a number of things to be right to get those long distances. But these are my Top 5 of things that you need to start throwing:

1. A Javelin

Of course! You can't throw a javelin without a Javelin. If you are only starting out, you should check with your local athletics teams. Being able to use a club's Javelin not only saves you forking out for your own but will also enable you to get started quicker and get a feel for the event. If you do wish to buy your javelin I highly recommend a Nordic the BEST brand in the World for Javelins!!! There are other makes like Sandvik which are high quality also. If you are just a beginner you needn't worry too much about this.

When choosing a Javelin to buy or use (whether in training or competition) there are two major considerations:

The correct weight for your age group/gender. The standard weight for women is 600grammes and for Men is 800grammes. Javelins are also generally available in 400, 500 and 700gram weights also. Some stockists also have special children's sizes and foam training aids which (look a bit like 3 foot rockets but) can be used INDOORS! Make sure you train with the correct weight or come competition day and you will be at a HUGE disadvantage!

International standards. The main concern here is centre of gravity. Some older models of Javelin are not approved for competition as their centre of gravity is different. Always check the competition rules AND double check that the javelin has a little sticker that usually says IAAF Approved.

2. Javelin SPIKES

These are your throwing shoes! Heel spikes are VITAL in order to avoid slipping and to generate the thrust you need when planting your foot. Without spikes in the heel you risk SLIPPING which can be very dangerous with enough momentum behind you and particularly if there has been any rain. Some equipment stockists sell a heel clip like below, which you can attach to normal running spikes. This is a very economical solution if you already have a pair of spikes.

3. Coordination

Unlike our hammer, discus and shot putting counterparts, we do not rely so much on strength and muscle as coordination and rhythm! It is the combination of many many little things that makes the Javelin go further! Being able to combine all these little things will get that Javelin going further.

4. Rhythm

A full throw contains a number of steps and requires your body to be in tune with a number of points. Having natural rhythm or developing your rhythym makes this so much easier.

5. A Routine

Every athlete needs a training routine. It should not be so repetitive that you get bored but it should enable you to work on the different aspects of the throw and developing the right types of muscle in a structured way. Repetition of the little things regularly will program them into your body and make them soo much easier to achieve naturally when you are throwing.

Some of these steps are clearly easier to follow than others! If you need further information please ensure that you seek out complete and accurate information. This will avoid risking injury. Only take advice from coaches or athletes with real practical experience in this event.

Bollywood

Bollywood, derived from the mix of Bombay (the former name for Mumbai) and Hollywood, is a term that is used to refer to the Indian film (Hindi language) industry that is based in Mumbai. Indian cinema on the whole is also made up of Bengali cinema, Karnataka cinema, Kollywood (Tamil Film Industry), Malayalam cinema, Marathi cinema, Punjwood (Punjabi language), and Tollywood (Telugu film industry).

The Bollywood movie industry is by far one of the largest film industries in the world. On an average, it produces more than 800 feature films and over one thousand short films annually. Producers love making Bollywood movies simply because there are millions of millions of movie enthusiasts in India. Movie tickets here are the cheapest in the world. As demand and popularity of Bollywood movies grow within India and internationally, Bollywood production companies have increased their production spending to keep pace with the demands from the audience for better movies with more special effects and more exotic locations.

1896 is the year when cinema first entered India. The first silent films were introduced by Lumiere Brothers. Most Bollywood movies are 2 to 3 hours long. Themes vary from drama, romance, action, suspense, thriller, science fiction and comedy. The Indian Censor Board is a great crusader in preventing pornography and nudity in Bollywood movies.

Bollywood movies integrate their culture in every film. Indian films have a number of scenes displaying folk songs and dances that are incorporated in the movie's storyline.

Over the years, Bollywood movies went under major transformation and have also undergone a number of changes and improvements. Because of the rise and popularity of Hollywood movies, Indian films also adopt some of the trends similar to western films. This is evident in some movie scripts where the English language is sometimes used. The plots used in some Bollywood movies are also patterned in western style of scriptwriting. And mostly recently Bollywood has also started to release movies on the high definition video known as BlueRay to keep pace with the technology.

Awards ceremonies such as Filmfare Awards, IIFA Awards, and Zee Cine Awards, are held every year to recognize the contributions of movie director, cast, music director, playback singer, actors and all who are involved in the making of the movie.

Actors, writers and producers from both Bollywood and Hollywood industry have interests with each other's movie genre. This gave rise to the new era of Bollywood movies. The versatility and art of Bollywood movies are truly world class and can enter the international scene with outstanding and credible merits.

Over the years, Bollywood has produced many great movies like Devdas, Lagaan, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Swades, Jodhaa Akbar, Dhoom, Taare Zameen Par and Veer Zaara. Some world known personalities are Amitabh Bachchan, A. R. Rahman (music director), Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Kajol Mukherjee, Katrina Kaif, Madhuri Dixit, Mallika Shearwat, Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Sridevi, and Shilpa Shetty. Notable directors are Ashutosh Gowariker, Karan Johar and Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

How To Choose Beach Wedding Dresses for the Bride & Bridesmaids

Beach weddings are gaining popularity, with it more and more brides to be are having trouble finding the right bridal wear for their big day at the beach. The traditional wedding dresses just won't do in this more natural setting. Finding a dress that works can present some challenges for the bride to be.

You will probably give up your idea of being a Disney princess in a perfect Cinderella dress. You just can't wear those at the beach. You won't certainly look good at the end of the ceremony. The sea breeze and the beach environment just aren't hospitable for such a formal gown.

Simple designs are the way to go when doing a beach wedding. You can't very well wear a long flowing white wedding dress across the sand, it would ruin the dress and with it your perfect beach wedding experience. Great beach wedding attires are casual, relaxed, sexy, cool and beautiful it should also still have an inherent elegance to it. A white satin strapless dress is one such example. Other materials for great dresses are chiffon, crepe, georgette, organza, cotton and charmeuse. You should avoid wearing silk since silk isn't a breathable fabric.

The bridal entourage too should be dressed in similar attires. The bridesmaids could be given dresses of similar make and cut. The colors could be of the lighter hues such as white, cream or light pink. These colors are more appropriate for such a venue. Another idea is to have them wear short identical prom dresses. You can also have them fitted for dresses made especially for the occasion. This saves time in searching for that perfect design.

The sea breeze should really be taken into consideration. This should dictate the cut of the dress. Longer dresses tend to wave around in the wind and this could present some issues, so the best cut should be short. Slip dresses employing a straight-line design behaves better than fuller skirts. If you do decide to have a flowing dress, have it long. A simple strapless flared skirt is a possibility. To break the color up, you can add a little something blue for luck. This additional color won't clash with the overall color theme since it matches the ocean.

A veil may be a nice addition to the dress but it really isn't that practical. The veil will tend to flap around in the wind. You may even lose it to the wind completely, might as well leave the veils for the ones doing traditional weddings.

You may want to wear a wide brimmed hat to complete the beach look. You may also try and add a flower to your hair. Make sure though that these are secured by pins. You dont want them flying off during the "I do"s.

You shouldn't wear constricting high heels. You should wear sandals or go barefoot instead. Remember, the overall theme of a beach wedding is being free of the traditional. You should be casual and comfortable, instead of stiff and reserved.

About the Author

Kelly Hann believes that although the atmostphere and location is more casual and simple than other wedding themes, there are still many ways to turn simple Beach Wedding Dresses into a charming wedding gown. The key is to incorporate some Creative Wedding Ideas to the wedding.

Announce Your Wedding Online to Friends and Family with a Wedding Website

Wedding planning seems to go on for months and months, but that final moment when it all comes together seems to be over within just the blink of an eye. One way to simplify your wedding planning is to create your own wedding website. A wedding website enables you to capture RSVP emails, make announcements about the wedding to friends and relatives, and more.

What is a Wedding Website?

A wedding website is your own Web URL or a certain amount of space hosted on another's website that announces your wedding and includes some information that possible guests would want to know. The website is dedicated solely to your wedding. It's a great way to let those nearby or abroad know about your wedding date and details, who will be in the wedding, and what to expect.

The wedding website may contain photos of the bride and groom with special captions to explain each photo, the bride's and groom's names, the wedding date, an optional wedding song lyric, and a listing of the bride and groom parties. You can also post personal information about how you met, how the groom proposed, and who you are now. The website may also have a guestbook for visitors to leave comments for you. You can even list links to your bridal registries to make gift giving easy.

Your Own Web Space versus Using Space on Another Site

If you don't mind paying monthly fees for your own domain name and web hosting, you can get your own wedding website and hire a designer or design it on your own if you have the know-how. This gives you more flexibility as to what you can include, how many photos you can upload, and how long you want to display the website.

If you want to keep costs as low as possible, you might opt to get a free wedding website hosted on another's website. Some wedding planning websites will offer free space to you for several months before the wedding. They will allow you to upload certain information and a limited number of photos. Also, these types of sites will usually provide design templates for you to choose from to make creating the website easy. If you choose the free wedding website, you might be required to have an ad or two on your website as a sponsor. This is a fair trade since you're getting your website free of charge.

When seeking a wedding website venue, check out the company thoroughly before entering photos or personal information. Also, take a look at their example sites to get an idea of the quality of design and how yours will look once completed. Be sure you'll be able to update or delete the wedding site at any time, and find out how many photos you can include. Look at the template designs to be sure there's one you'll like.

The benefits of having a wedding website are many. It gives another avenue of reaching guests and helps to personalize your wedding planning. Go online today to start planning your most special event!
